First outings with baby: What to plan for

First outings with baby: What to plan for

What you need to know for a stress-free outing with your baby.

Warmer days are coming, and we want to enjoy the beautiful sunshine. But you've just had a little baby. Congratulations! You're ready to introduce your little one to the world. You probably have a multitude of questions buzzing in your head before leaving the house for the first time with your baby. "Do I need a suitcase or just a backpack? And how do we manage all of this without turning the outing into an impossible mission?" Don't panic, we have the answers to your questions!

1. Choosing the right time: the outing hour

Even before thinking about what to bring, it's crucial to choose the perfect time for your first outdoor adventure. A baby who has just eaten, had a good nap, and had their needs changed will be much more pleasant to take out. On the other hand, a tired, hungry baby, or one who just threw a little tantrum, will not make this outing an unforgettable moment... at least not in a good way.

A good piece of advice: avoid outings during colic hours (we know this varies from baby to baby, but generally, it starts in the late afternoon). This is not ideal for a peaceful stroll. You don't want to risk crying at the same time as your baby, do you?

2. The diaper bag: a miniature suitcase

So, what should you pack in this famous diaper bag? If you've ever seen parents struggling outside a store with a pile of bags, you'll want to avoid that scene. Here is the list of essentials:

  • Diapers and wipes: This is obvious, but you'd be surprised how many parents forget the essentials. Be prepared for a diaper mishap at any time.

  • A blanket: To protect baby from the wind or simply to lay them down if necessary. A good old piece of fabric works wonders!

  • A complete change of clothes: You're not immune to a little accident.

  • Bottle or breastfeeding supplies: Depending on your baby's feeding method, don't forget their meal. Even if you're "only" gone for half an hour, you know your baby will be hungry at the most inopportune moment.

  • Spare clothes: It's practically guaranteed there will be a leak of drool, milk, or something else. Anticipate.

  • A favorite toy: Don't panic, baby will be distracted by their little comforter or a soft toy during the walk. It's a magic technique to keep them occupied if they cry.

3. The right equipment: choosing a baby carrier or stroller

There are several schools of thought: stroller or baby carrier? It all depends on your style and where you're going. A short walk in the city? The stroller will be your best friend. A forest hike (if you're brave enough to try that right from the start)? The baby carrier will probably be more suitable.

  • The stroller: Opt for a model that is easy to handle and lightweight. Make sure it provides good head and neck support for your baby. And most importantly, remember to check the recline so your baby can lie down comfortably.

  • The baby carrier: Very practical for keeping your baby close to you. Choose an ergonomic and comfortable one, both for you and for them.

And let's not forget that, whatever your option, you should always check the weather before you leave. A baby should not be too hot or too cold, so plan layers according to the season.

4. Safety first: safety essentials

When we talk about going out with a baby, we must not forget safety. Even if the baby cannot roll over yet, it is better to be prepared.

  • If you're using a car: The car seat is essential! Choose a model suitable for your baby's age and weight.

  • Protect baby from the sun: A hat and baby-safe sunscreen are essential, even in winter (UV rays can be deceptive).

  • Stroller straps: If you have a stroller, make sure it's stable and there's no risk of tipping.

5. Don't forget: a good dose of patience!

The first outing can be... chaotic. Between unexpected events, delays, and crying, it's likely that things won't go as planned. Don't panic! Take a deep breath and remember that every outing with a baby is an adventure in itself, and you'll come out stronger and more confident next time.

Successful outing or averted disaster?

In summary, your first outings with baby need to be well-prepared, but most importantly, don't let the idea of "everything having to be perfect" stress you out. Most parents (I speak from experience) will tell you that the first outing is never as simple as imagined, but it's also a great opportunity to learn how to handle unexpected situations with your baby. Remember: it's an adventure to share as a family, and sometimes, a little bit of craziness is part of the journey!
