Preparing Baby's First Meals
Introducing solid foods is a key step in your baby's development. Gradually introducing new foods helps awaken their palate, meet their nutritional needs, and foster a positive relationship with food. In this article, discover all our tips for a smooth transition.
1/ When to start introducing solid foods?
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends introducing solid foods around 6 months, while continuing breastfeeding or formula feeding. But every baby is unique! Some will show signs of interest in food a little earlier and others a little later, and that's completely normal. My little one started at 4.5 months, while other babies in the family started at 7 months. No need to panic! Just follow the signs.
Signs that your baby is ready:
- They can hold their head up without support.
- They show interest in food (they watch you eat, reach for your plate, or try to snatch food from your plate ^^).
- They open their mouth when a spoon is presented.
2/ Which foods to start with?
The first foods should be simple, easy to digest, and low in allergens. We recommend:
-
Vegetables: carrots, zucchini, sweet potatoes, green beans.
-
Fruits: apple, pear, banana, peach.
-
Infant cereals without gluten (rice, corn).
It is advisable to start with very smooth purees, then gradually thicken the textures to get the baby used to chewing.
3/ How to introduce foods?
- Introduce one food at a time, for 2 to 3 days, to identify any allergic reactions.
- Offer new foods at lunchtime to better observe your baby's reactions.
- Respect your child's preferences: if they refuse a food, do not force them and try again later.
- Prioritize homemade foods, without added salt or sugar.
4/ Mixed feeding or Baby-Led Weaning (BLW): which method to choose?
There are two approaches to introducing solid foods:
-
Mixed feeding: gradual introduction of purees then finger foods.
-
Baby-Led Weaning (BLW): similar to the Montessori approach, the baby eats pieces of food adapted to their grasping ability on their own.
Each method has its advantages; choose the one that suits you best. The essential thing is to follow your child's rhythm and ensure their safety.
5/ Mistakes to avoid
It is essential not to introduce solid foods too early, as the baby's digestive system is not yet mature enough before 4 to 6 months of age.
Adding salt or sugar to preparations is not recommended, as this can accustom the baby to overly strong flavors and negatively impact their future eating habits.
You should never force a baby to eat if they are not hungry, as this risks creating a negative relationship with food.
Finally, it is best to introduce only one new food at a time to better identify any allergic reactions.
Introducing solid foods is a wonderful adventure that requires patience and kindness. Every baby develops at their own pace, and the important thing is to offer them a varied and balanced diet. By following these tips, you will help your child develop healthy eating habits for life!
