How to help baby sleep better when it's hot? Our tips for more peaceful nights

Summer days often mean walks, holidays, and family time. But when temperatures rise, nights can become more complicated for little ones. Baby struggles to fall asleep, wakes up more often, or seems restless... These reactions are common when it's very hot.

How can you help your baby sleep better during hot weather? What steps should you take to promote more comfortable and safe sleep? Here are our tips for getting through summer nights more serenely.

1) Why does heat disturb baby's sleep?

Babies regulate their body temperature less effectively than adults. When it's hot, their bodies have to work harder to dissipate heat, which can make it harder to fall asleep and cause more frequent awakenings.

An overly warm environment can also lead to discomfort, significant sweating, and irritability, all of which disrupt the usual sleep rhythm.

2) Keep the room as cool as possible

Room temperature plays an essential role in sleep quality.

During the day, close blinds and curtains when the sun is strongest to limit heat build-up. Ventilate early in the morning and late in the evening when the outside air is cooler.

If you use a fan, make sure it never blows directly on the baby. Its role is simply to circulate the air in the room.

3) Dress baby in light clothing

When temperatures rise, it's best to choose natural, breathable, and soft materials for the skin.

Organic cotton is particularly popular for sleepwear and accessories that accompany baby daily. Depending on the room temperature, a light bodysuit or an appropriate summer sleeping bag may be sufficient.

It is best to avoid adding several layers of clothing "just in case". An over-dressed baby will often have more difficulty falling asleep.

4) Keep baby well hydrated throughout the day

Hydration also contributes to baby's comfort when it's hot.

Breastfed or bottle-fed infants may ask to feed more often. These more frequent feedings are normal during periods of intense heat.

For older babies who have started solids, regularly offer water in addition to their food, according to your doctor's or pediatrician's recommendations.

5) Establish a soothing bedtime routine

Even during holidays or heatwaves, maintaining some reassuring habits often helps babies sleep better.

A warm (not cold) bath, a story, a lullaby, or a quiet moment in soft light can gradually prepare the body for sleep.

Regularity remains a valuable guide, even when days are a little different.

6) The comforter, a reassuring landmark

When baby sleeps less well, they often seek out familiar objects more.

Their comforter can become a true source of comfort. Its smell, texture, and presence help recreate a reassuring environment, even when the heat makes falling asleep more difficult.

Choose a light comforter, easy to handle, and made from soft materials suitable for little ones.

7) The cotton swaddle: a summer essential

Among the most useful accessories when temperatures rise, the organic cotton swaddle deserves a prominent place.

It can serve as a light blanket during a supervised nap, protect baby from the sun while out and about (without ever obstructing air circulation in the stroller), wipe away a little sweat, or even offer a clean surface during a break.

Its lightness and versatility make it an everyday ally throughout the summer season.

8) Observe signs that baby is too hot

A few simple actions can help check baby's comfort.

Gently touch their neck or upper back. If the skin is very warm and damp, it's likely necessary to lighten their clothing or slightly cool the room.

Conversely, hands or feet may be cooler without meaning the baby is cold.

9) Should you wake baby to cool them down?

In most situations, it is not necessary to wake a peacefully sleeping baby.

The essential thing is to maintain a comfortable environment, offer enough drinks throughout the day according to their age, and monitor their general condition, especially during periods of very hot weather.

In case of doubt, fever, unusual fatigue, or signs of dehydration, it is important to consult a healthcare professional quickly.
