First day of kindergarten: essentials for a smooth transition

First day of kindergarten: essentials for a smooth transition

Comforter, change of clothes, pacifier... How to serenely prepare for your child's first day of school?

The first day of kindergarten is an important milestone, especially for children entering preschool (TPS) or nursery school (PS). For many, it's also the first real separation from their parents and the beginning of a new rhythm, between discoveries, games... and naps at school.

While each child adapts at their own pace, a few habits and familiar objects can help them navigate this transition with greater confidence.

At Carotte & Cie, we know that it's often the small details that provide the greatest comfort.

1) Prepare a bag with essentials

Before school starts, inquire with the school: each institution has its own habits and list of supplies.

Here are the essentials most commonly found in toddlers' bags.

🧸 The comforter: a reassuring landmark

During the first few weeks, many schools allow children to keep their comforter, especially during nap time.

Its smell, texture, and presence reassure your child when they feel the need to reconnect with their world. The comforter becomes a true link between home and school.

Tip! If your child is very attached to their favorite companion, it might be useful to have a second identical one at home.

🌿 The maxi swaddle: softness and comfort

Some schools allow a swaddle to accompany the child during nap time, while others do not. In any case, it remains an essential for journeys, outings, or rest times at home as well as out and about.

Its softness, familiar smell, and lightness make it a comforting object that toddlers love to find after an emotional day.

🍼 The pacifier (if allowed)

If your child still uses a pacifier, some schools allow it only during rest or nap time.

Remember to check the school's rules and mark it with your child's name.

👕 A complete change of clothes

Even when the child is potty-trained, a small accident can happen.

Pack a complete outfit in a bag identified with their name:

  • a bodysuit or underwear,
  • trousers or leggings,
  • a t-shirt,
  • a pair of socks.

Depending on the season, add a cardigan or shorts. Don't forget to regularly change the outfit in the bag; they grow so fast at that age that you can quickly find yourself with an outfit that's too small!

🧷 Easy-to-put-on clothes

To encourage your child's independence, choose comfortable and easy-to-handle clothes: trousers with an elastic waist, Velcro shoes, an easy-to-open coat...

These small details make life easier for both children and the teaching staff.

2) Naps: a new rhythm to master

In nursery school, nap time is an integral part of the day.

Sleeping in an unfamiliar room, surrounded by other children, can require a little adaptation time. This is completely normal.

To help your child, try to maintain a ritual at home similar to the one they already know: a story, a hug, their comforter or swaddle before sleeping. These habits create reassuring landmarks that will help them fall asleep more easily, even in a new environment.

3) The first separation: embracing emotions

The start of school is often more difficult for parents... than they imagine.

A few tears when saying goodbye does not mean your child will have a bad day. Often, emotions quickly subside once the first activities begin.

To make the separation smoother, here are a few tips:

  • prepare your child a few days before by talking about school in positive terms;
  • establish a consistent goodbye ritual (a hug, a kiss, a reassuring phrase);
  • avoid leaving discreetly: a clear goodbye helps your child understand that you will return;
  • trust the educational team, who are accustomed to supporting first separations.

And trust yourself too, it will be fine...

4) The personalized illustrated cushion: a soft landmark for naps at school

For many children in preschool (TPS) or nursery school (PS), nap time at school is a big novelty. Sleeping away from home, in a room shared with other children, sometimes requires a little time to find their bearings.

If the school allows it, a personalized illustrated cushion can accompany these rest times. With their name, your child can easily recognize it among those of their classmates, which promotes their autonomy and also makes the daily life of the educational team easier.

Finding a familiar, soft, and personalized cushion helps create a reassuring environment when falling asleep. After the nap, it naturally finds its place in your child's schoolbag or locker thanks to their clearly visible name.

For a start to school filled with confidence...

The first day of school is the beginning of a new adventure. With a few familiar landmarks, carefully chosen objects, and a lot of kindness, your child will gradually gain confidence.

At Carotte & Cie, we design handmade creations made in our workshop in Hauts-de-France to accompany toddlers through all the big moments of their childhood.

Because the most beautiful memories often begin with a comforter held tight... and one last hug before walking through the school door.
